The forthcoming live-action Aladdin is the same. It’s not like people are in fucking catsuits in that thing, because, on a basic level of taste, we all understand that would be ridiculous. Ditto for Disney’s stage performance of The Lion King. When Major Attaway played the part, the design was brilliantly elegant and creative. That being, it’s fine to change things and interpret something differently.Ĭase in point, the Genie in the popular Broadway version of Disney’s Aladdin was not a dude covered in blue paint. In attempting to remain faithful-ish to the look of animated Robin Williams, Disney simply failed to grasp an essential truth about adaptation. In almost every single way, this is exactly what Disney did with the designs for the live-action Beauty and the Beast, they tried to make the cartoon come to life. But, when you use your brain and think about how this happened, you’ll realize something more interesting: This design was clearly created to make people happy. Your gut reaction tells you this is just wrong because it just looks creepy. Viscerally, its easy to understand why everyone hates this. The stuff of nightmares? Or just branding gone too far?
